Memories (smr̥tti) and impressions (saṁskāra) are basically the same. You carry them along with you through different life situations (jāti), places where you are (deśa) and throughout different phases of life (kāla). You are constantly confronted with these and they show up over and over again, which lead to the same issues.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - modern transfer
Due to the identical form of memory (smr̥ti) and impressions (saṁskāra) these are in continuous succession, even if they [can be] separated by birth (jāti) x, place (deśa) or time (kāla).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - historic word by word translation
x: | Considering the context of time in which this text was written, this line refers to the impressions leftover from different lives. This is a reference to rebirth. |
Paul Deussen - 1908
There is an immediacy among those (impressions) though intercepted by bank (in the scale of being) place and time, because the recollection and the train of selfreproductive impression are identical (that is they are not different).
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
As long as your wishes move you, your actions will be determined by impressions (saṁskāra). Even the desire to live leaves such an imprint.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - modern transfer
These [imprints (saṁskāra) 1 are] without beginning (anādhva). [They arise] from the endlessness of wishes [to live].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - historic word by word translation
1: | Probably a mistake in the manuscript and most manuscripts. Instead of tāsām (gen pl f), it should be teṣām (gen pl m). Only in this way can the reference to the impressions (saṁskāra) be made. |
Diese [Residua der Werke] sind anfanglos, weil der [in ihnen sich bekundende] Wille von Ewigkeit her ist.
Paul Deussen - 1908
They have eternity because the benediction is enternal.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
Cause (hetu) and effect (phala) remain so long as you perceive yourself as separate (āśraya) from your environment (ālambana). Impressions (saṁskāra) only dissolve when you no longer separate yourself from your environment
Dr. Ronald Steiner - modern transfer
Through the correlation between cause (hetu) and fruit (phala), subject (āśraya) and object (ālambana) [arises]. The absence of these (saṁskāra) only occurs with the absence of those [four factors: cause, fruit, subject, object].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - historic word by word translation
Paul Deussen - 1908
As (they are) collected by cause, effect, substratum and support (therefore) on non-existence of these, non-existence of the impressions takes place.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
